Why Am I Still Tired After Sleeping?

Getting enough hours in bed doesn't always mean waking up feeling rested.

Maybe you have trouble falling asleep. Maybe you wake up during the night. Or maybe you sleep through the night and still wake up tired.

Instead of focusing only on the number of hours you sleep, it can help to look at your sleep and what is happening during the rest of your day.

Sleep is one part of the picture.

What happens before you go to bed and throughout your day may be useful to consider too.

Start with your sleep

What is happening with your sleep?

Poor sleep can look different from one person to another.

Trouble falling asleep Waking during the night Waking too early Waking up tired Hard to wind down Feeling sleepy during the day

Start with the part of sleep that is difficult for you.

Then look at whether anything seems different on the nights you sleep better or worse.

Look at the whole day

Your sleep doesn't start when you get into bed

Bedtime matters, but it isn't the only part of your day worth looking at.

Eating, movement, opportunities to rest, and the stress you're dealing with can all be useful things to consider when you're trying to understand your sleep.

N

Nutrition

Think about when and what you're eating and drinking. Does your sleep seem different on some days than others?

E

Exercise

How does movement fit into your day? Does your sleep seem different on days when you're more or less active?

R

Rest

Are you giving yourself time to slow down before bed? Are you taking breaks when you're tired during the day?

S

Stress Management

Is it difficult to stop thinking about work, responsibilities, or problems when you're trying to sleep?

These four areas make up the NERS Framework:

Nutrition, Exercise, Rest and Stress Management.

Look for patterns

Start with what you can learn from your sleep

You don't need to change everything about your day or create a perfect bedtime routine.

Instead of only asking

“How do I get better sleep?”

try asking

“What might be affecting my sleep?”

What time did I go to bed?
Was it hard to fall asleep?
Did I wake during the night?
Was I dealing with a lot of stress?
Did I have time to slow down?
How did I feel when I woke up?

You don't need an answer after one night. Look for patterns over time.

Know when to get more support

When poor sleep keeps getting in the way

Everyone has a difficult night sometimes. But ongoing sleep problems can have many causes.

If you're regularly having trouble sleeping, you're very sleepy during the day, your sleep problems are getting worse, or you're concerned about how you're feeling, talk with a qualified healthcare professional.

ECO Wellness can help you identify patterns in your everyday life. It isn't a substitute for medical care.

Put NERS into everyday life

See your sleep patterns over time

It can be difficult to remember what happened several days ago or what was different before a better or worse night of sleep.

The ECO Wellness Companion gives you a simple place to check in with Nutrition, Exercise, Rest and Stress Management and see what seems to help.
